Good Afternoon guys! For our last meeting, we’d love to get to know how you guys use two different languages when speaking! This is called translanguaging and you probably use it more than you know. We’d also love to get a more detailed insight into your day to day life in Brazil and how it's different from our day to day life! In this meeting, I'm going to be recording this and my group will be creating a podcast out of this. We’re going to ask you guys 3 questions about your culture/ everyday life to learn more about how different your life is in Brazil compared to ours here in the U.S. After that, I hope you guys have questions for us and we’ll answer them to the best of our ability. So for this episode, we are going to cover the powerful idea in education called translanguaging.

Now let me explain to the best of my abilities what it means. For those who are bilingual and multilingual the term is applied to you.The word means that those who can speak more than one language use both or all their languages together in flexible and natural ways.They can say a sentence using both words from English and let's say Portuguese to get their sentence to make sense.For example - “I’m tired, mas vou continuar.” (I’m tired, but I will continue)This concept helps people understand that language in a person's mind is not in separate boxes but free flowing all of the time and can be used whenever. When specifically talking about in the classroom students could read in one language but then discuss what they read in another language

So Are there any times where you use Portuguese more so than English or vice versa when do you speak each language the most and what scenarios require you to translanguage

Stephy- When meeting with students from Griggs academy, Brianna and I found it shocked, but not surprising. In a typical morning routine of a high school student in America and Brazil, it is surprising that students don’t eat breakfast! “Roughly 23–27% of US adolescents and a significant portion of Brazilian students, with some studies indicating over 50% in specific contexts, regularly skip breakfast”. (Pereira et al., 2018). This is a common similarity that students have. Griggs students reported that the most important meal of the day is lunch. Most of the students are athletes. They eat a big lunch because they spend a lot of time after school doing extracurricular activities whether its taekwondo, volleyball, etc. Another cultural similarity is not brushing their teeth before they eat. I brush my teeth before breakfast because I wait a couple hours before I eat.
