19:48:00 Why it's important in the classroom within this episode. We will discuss ways in which we experience trans language in the classroom as well as ways.
19:48:07 We will take what we learned and utilize it in our own classrooms.
19:48:12 We'll even discuss our own experiences. where we had trans language with our students from Spain.
19:48:16 So what is trans languaging, Well, trans languaging refers to when a multilingual or bilingual person's full repertoire is used and honored instead of trying to keep it, Lee keep it narrowly focused on a
19:48:31 single language. So what does this mean? So this means that as teachers, we will never make a student uncomfortable for the language, they are comfortable with speaking.
19:48:43 If we need to translate an assignment first student, we will do it.
19:48:46 We will go to any measure necessary to ensure that our students are comfortable, and when it comes to our bilingual and multilingual students we will trans language in the classroom, so that is necessary to make them feel safe.
19:48:58 Yes, exactly. So let's explain our experiences sure So when I was in the first grade, we had a new student come to our class from Russia, actually, which was so fascinating.
19:49:10 So since my teacher knew I spoke Polish I don't speak it anymore.
19:49:14 When I was younger I spoke it, but on the first day Katarina came to our class She paired me with her because our languages were very similar, and when this teacher handed out assignments for her, she translated her
19:49:25 homework and assignments to Russian, and then, finally, she allowed Katerina to speak Russian, and if I were able to translate for her, she allowed it.
19:49:33 And I love this idea because this ensures that the new student who does not speak English, is actually comfortable in the teacher's classroom, and I don't have a personal experience on my own, but I will share one of my oldest
19:49:46 sisters, she's actually a teacher, and so one year she had a student couldn't understand, or speak English as well, and instead they were more so fluent in Spanish.
19:49:55 The and so, in order to make the student if you're more feel more comfortable, the older sister would translate the homework and assignments into Spanish for the student, she also allowed the student to speak in Spanish and even write the
19:50:07 answers for the assignments in Spanish, too, and this allowed for the student to feel more heard and seen in a classroom, and it also allowed the student to be able to work to the best of their abilities.
19:50:18 The student was enforced to speak English one in the classroom either, and this just helped the student feel a lot more comfortable.
19:50:25 This is also very important, since, as teachers we want all of our students to feel comfortable in the classroom, and we don't want to make them feel like uncomfortable or even like judged Wow! Those stories, are amazing.
19:50:38 I experience chance language in a different form my family is from Diana, and although we speak English, our overall language is defined as a Creole dialog, so it's really an accent. and when I was growing up I had trouble
19:50:52 deciphering what was considered standard English in school, and I never really viewed my parents to be speaking a different language.
19:50:59 So when I would use my guy in his accent in school or around my friends, I kind of felt out of place, but solely I learned that it's a part of me, and I should practice it with pride.
19:51:10 Well still knowing the differences between what standard English would be and what my guy needs accent would be.
19:51:15 Did anybody translate with their virtual exchange? Student: I did.
19:51:19 But first I want to say I loved your story I thought it's so amazing.

19:51:28 Mike, partner. Martin was trying to explain canoeing in English, but was having a lot of difficulty doing so.
19:51:35 Therefore I shared my screen with him typed in the word into Google translate, and I showed him how we say it in English, because it's a difficult word to say.
19:51:42 I feel like. So also I showed him a picture of a canoe this way.
19:51:47 It was easy for him to understand it even better, and not once, that I put more and down for not being able to say that word in English.
19:51:53 Instead, I made sure he knew he was comfortable, and made sure he knew he could speak Spanish around me anytime.
19:51:58 He wanted to. How about you, Allie? do you have a story? Yeah, I have a similar one. when I was meeting with my partner, Julia. A few times we used Google translate, because I would either not know how to say a certain word in Spanish or she
19:52:11 wouldn't know how to say one in English so I remember that one time we were talking about food, and I extra what her favorite food was, and she like couldn't say canal like she didn't know the English word for it and so I
19:52:22 went on, Google translate, and I was just like typing in a bunch of food.
19:52:25 And eventually she was like, Oh, I think it's that one and so that after that I like searched up a picture.
19:52:31 And she was like, Okay, yeah, catalogue and I was like oh, nice.
19:52:33 So it's kind of cool because it's like showing her like a new word that she didn't know, and so not once like somewhat to how you were with Martin.
19:52:41 Did I make Julia feel uncomfortable because you you know it's it's hard like knowing like multiple languages like knowing the exact words I didn't want her to feel uncomfortable and I thought it was like really good
19:52:50 because we were able to handle the situation properly. Wow! I really love those stories I love. How you guys really paid attention to your virtual exchange. Student:
19:53:00 With my virtual exchange student daniel we didn't really have problems with words, but I noticed that sometimes when I would be talking
19:53:07 We were talking about vacations and traveling you wouldn't really understand some of the words I would use mainly on more of an intellectual level of my vocabulary compared to his So in turn.
19:53:21 I would just try to make my sentences more similar and more broken down, and I found that that really helped him.
19:53:26 So when we become teachers, we can also make sure that our students are comfortable with whatever language they feel.
19:53:32 Safe, speaking, and with understanding the languages around them we'll guide our students to use all of their linguistic abilities, and not keep them confined to one language at all.
19:53:40 So our classrooms will be safe environments for all of our students, regardless of what language they speak.
19:53:46 And in the end trans language should be a concept. In every classroom overall we smile in the same language.
