Adriana: Good morning everyone, and welcome to our Podcast “It’s All a Figure of Speech.” I’m your host, Adriana Barbieri here with Divya Patel…

Divya: Hello everyone!

Adriana: and in today’s episode we will be discussing the topic of idioms in our world today. Idioms are used in everyday language, even if we don’t even realize it.

Divya: Exactly, an idiom is an expression whose meaning is not predictable from the usual grammatical rules of a language or from the usual meanings of its constituent elements. Basically, they don’t really mean what they literally suggest.

Adriana: Idioms add color to our conversation and help us to read between the lines to understand their hidden meanings. By learning more idioms and phrasal verbs, this will build your vocabulary and help to improve your lexical resource. But though they are fun, idioms are not always easily understood.

Divya: That’s right, and in this episode we will explain how idioms can be difficult for non-English speakers to understand.

Adriana and Divya: have a conversation reflecting our experiences with the virtual exchange students. We did a lesson teaching the students about idioms and comparing English versus Spanish idioms. The lesson along with the whole virtual experience was very fun and interesting, but we did reach a few bumps in the road and challenges. Overall, in this portion of the podcast we discussed and reflected our experiences from teaching the students about idioms while also reflecting on the virtual exchange as a whole without reading directly from a script.
