Sociolinguistic Perspectives in Education Episode 73
Hello my name is Maribeth and my name is Daniel and we're the hosts of the podcast called Voice Unbounded. In this podcast we will be discussing how there are different ways to express yourself and communicate. Whether it be through using different languages, using your hands, or the many different ways you can communicate.
I want you all to know that in this podcast we will be sharing ways of communicating. For anyone watching there is no right or wrong way to communicate.
Who out there speaks other languages or more than 1 lanaguage?
I myself speak two languages, Russian and English. Russian was my primary language when I first began schooling, and spoke it at home with my family. Then, I did have a tendency to speak English in my class at school. I do love to portray my opinions with others, but I do tend to hold back maybe not to offend anybody and limit myself. But lets start from the beginning, with talking about communication and the definition of communication. Communication is when you say or think or talk to somebody else, and is also about cooperation. If you cooperation with somebody you can have back and forth conversations that make you feel you can talk to anybody and can make good frends. You can also be a listener, you have to have a back and forth where both participants are comfortable. Today, we will not only be talking about languages, but also how languages form.
While, I do not speak any other language fluently outside of English, but I do know a little Spanish. I am good with learning, and thats okay too. You do not have to be born to know a language, but also learn from others in school, friends, and others.
We can learn and communicate from so many other ways school, televisions, radios, observations, many things around the world help us say what we want to say without verbally saying it. Today we have social media, twitter, Instagram, newspapers, computers, so many different ways to communicate and engage with medias. Its not just the words that make people communicate, its also body language. For instance sign language, people that cant hear necessarily, sign language is a way for them and others to express themselves. For instance, posture is a huge thing. If you are in a meeting slouched you may seem disinterested, rather than if you sit up tall people expect you to reply back and are interested. Everything around us is a way for us to express ourselves.
Can I ask you a question?
Absolutely
What would you say is the best way to communicate in your opinion?
For me, there are several factors to it, such as who. For classmates I would say English because its the most commonly spoken language, but my grandparents only speak Russian, they don't know English so for them I only communicate with them in Russain. I think that goes for a lot of people, my grandparents came to this country when they were in their 40s and that made it harder for them to try and learn a new language. Here and there they pick up on some lingo, but you can't have a full on conversation in English.
How about you? Who do you communicate with and whats the easiest way for you to express yourself?
In my opinion English is the best way to communicate, since here in America everyone mainly speaks English. But, I don't feel there is any right or wrong way to speak. For me, I was rasied Christian so I've always known English and I think thats how I was raised so for me at least I think English is best.
Do you communicate over social media or text more than calling people? I find most people find it eaiser to text or snap somebody rather than calling or seeing them in-person.
I like texting people better, its my way to get better with my writing and learning to see what I'm going to say before I sent it.
How about you what do you think calling or texting?
For me its calling, theres voice, gestures, rather than texting where you lack the sense of emotion, and it can get confusing. I know if someone texts me one thing I can misinterpret it, whether they're mad at me or whether they're portraying a simple gesture. I would prefer facetime or calling to see how they're communicating with me.
I think thats also a good way to express yourself when you're calling someone. Theres no right or wrong way to communicate with others.
Yup, I think technology will keep evolving, who knows what future will host for us in the future.
I think we'll wrap up the podcast here for today. It was a pleasure talking to you today.
